April 14

Old stone wall from a medieval castle with many stones replaced and plants growing from gaps.
Watercolor by Jenifer Cartland, 2026
Bits of dust
blown by salty air
into gaps
of a broken wall
sow a garden all their own

  1. Plants will grow in surprising and tough places. I like this tracing back of how they got there—dust and salt and sand. And this might be my favorite watercolor so far. All those shapes and shades of rock

  2. I do love a “rock garden” that appears to grow in spite of the difficult environment. Once again the words and painting gel!

    • This is the same wall that inspired my Creative Spark — as you note, we learn so much in the growth that happens when it seems least likely to. Thank you for your kind words.
