Concrete squares
lay out for miles,
tar driveways melt,
made endless
by eager sun.
Crisscross blocks,
seek any shade.
Detour through Paul’s
dark garden path —
relief of damp cool.
Delay the last
bright patch
’till dinner.
Sprawl in the grass
by Marbach’s
on the tiny hill
we made the center
of the earth.
Ponder weeds
swaying in the heat.

This is so summer…it’s here early this year.
It is late here, but I see it coming soon! Glad you enjoyed it.

Love that last, dreamy stanza!
Thanks! All about those eternal walks home from school when I was a kid. Eternal. 🙂

They sound like magical walks 🙂
these lines provide such a lovely escape from the heat: “Detour through Paul’s
dark garden path —relief of damp cool.”
Yes. It was a magical place, one that I have always tried to replicate in my own garden. So glad that came across to you. Thank you for reading so carefully.
these lines provide such a welcome refuge from the heat: “Detour through Paul’s
dark garden path —relief of damp cool.”
You have such a gift for bringing your reader on your journeys. I especially loved the image of sprawling on the grass and pondering weeds.
Thank you!! Glad that you felt some presence here. I wish I could draw out personalities more, though. I think you do that really well in your Rosewitch series. It’s all al journey, I guess.
It’s that kind of summer we rarely have here.. yet I can feel the heat ozing out of tarmac… unmoving air, and that search for shade.
Thanks so much. Long, hot, desperate afternoons. I always have wondered if I would have preferred to grow up where the summers were as brief as they are for you. These things shape us.
Sigh… such a dream-like quality to your verse 😀
Thanks so much! I was mediating in my long walks home from school in the blistering heat. And they were so much easier if I went to dreamland!

Your comment to Sanaa Rizvi amazed as much as the poem. Getting creative within a mundane activity just to cope! Loved it!
🙂 It is the story of my childhood. I don’t think I could have survived another way. So glad you stopped by!
Me too. 🙂
Summer is starting to ramp up here. thank you for taking us along with you on this trip, through Paul’s garden and all other points.
You are welcome! Thank you for being open.
Summer is also heating up here and all the weeds and daffodils have dried up ~ Love the cadence of your verses ~ Thanks for joining in~
Thank you for your kind words.
Wonderful images of summer — the melting tar 🙂 the damp cool. I do believe “summer” should be a verb. Right? 🙂
Perhaps add a link to dVerse at the end of your poem when posting to dVerse? It’s such a wonderful place of folks who truly enjoy the power of words and communicating with one another in this amazing cyber space. Then others can find their way to the pub also! 🙂 So nice to see you this morning — and happy summering! 🙂
Good point! Will do.
Thanks for your kind words!
A breezy respite from the overwhelming heat… your words are cool and comforting.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it.
