open water, patches
of sleet chunks, rolling skin,
long stretches of ice sheets
deluding us that underneath
lies still — exoskeleton
of gray, silver, blue, black
rising and falling while breath
moves under and through,
amniosis seeping, small curls
along the shoreline
where warmth? hidden dark
into the churning below,
gestating secrets birthed
slowly with unknown pain
nameless, of unknown nativity
It sounds like Spring is just around the corner.

Thank you for these kind words. Lake Michigan always scares me in winter … so cold and fierce.

That “exoskeleton” is the perfect way to describe it.

Seems that water is still pretty sloshy with ice. I guess winter is there to stay for a while. I too would be frightened by the power of that lake in the winter. Your description made me shiver…

Oh winter.. it’s like a hand that grip your throat… yet there are those days of deadly beauty… love your description.

Wonderful description of winter’s darkness. Love the part about the hidden secrets down below the water. Chilling! 🙂

An amazing combination of winter and birth. The darkness and uncertainty and also fear. The “small curls/along the shoreline” and the “rolling skin”–so perfectly uncomfortable.

Thank you! Yes. Driving along Lake Michigan everyday gives me plenty of opportunity to be intimidated.

Thankful that despite the dead of winter there is still that warmth which exists below.

Much as I love winter sports, there is something menacing about the power of ice and snow, and you capture that perfectly here.
